Securing your boxes correctly is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your belongings during a move. A well-packed box can still fail if it is not closed, taped, or labelled properly. Taking a few extra minutes to prepare each carton ensures they travel safely, stack neatly, and end up in the right place at your new home.
Always close the top and bottom flaps flat, without bulging. If the flaps do not meet comfortably, the box is overfilled and needs to be repacked. For heavier loads, such as books or crockery, consider doubling the base by folding two sets of flaps inward before taping. Never just “tuck” the flaps into one another, as this offers no strength and will collapse when lifted.
The type of tape and the way you apply it matters. Ordinary sticky tape or masking tape is not designed for moving; it peels away under weight. Use strong packing tape at least 48mm wide.
Proper labelling saves hours of confusion when unloading. Write clearly on two sides of every box, not just the top. At minimum, include the destination room. For example, “Kitchen – Glasses” or “Bedroom 2 – Clothes”. Fragile items should be marked boldly on multiple sides.
If using a removals company, labelling helps crews place boxes in the correct rooms without having to ask repeatedly. It also reduces the chance of boxes being stacked in unsuitable areas, such as fragile cartons placed beneath heavy ones. Colour coding with stickers or tape can make the process even faster.
Strong closure, proper taping, and clear labelling are essential parts of moving preparation. Close flaps flat, seal with the H method using quality packing tape, and mark every box for its destination. Combined with sturdy Double Wall cardboard boxes, these small steps keep your possessions safe in transit and make unpacking far less stressful.
